Winter Drops By For The Holiday

By Reported by Al Nash
November 24, 2010

Albright Visitor Center around midday on Tuesday. NPS photo by Al Nash.

Tomorrow may be Thanksgiving, but it’ll be more like Christmas or New Years in Yellowstone due to the arrival of a major winter storm there.

Winter storm warnings have been posted for the park and surrounding areas, with a blizzard warning issued for West Yellowstone and Bozeman. The park had received from six to eight inches of new snow by midday on Tuesday, adding to the nearly two feet already recorded in Mammoth.

The road from Mammoth through Tower to the Northeast Entrance and Cooke City is closed to the public. All interior park roads are closed to administrative travel.

The Lake area lost electric service yesterday morning and was operating on generators at the time of the report yesterday.

Non-essential park employees who work in Mammoth but live outside Mammoth were released at noon and will not be required to come to work today.

Albright Visitor Center closed at noon on Tuesday and will remain closed until Friday morning (it’s normally closed on Thanksgiving).
